2 drones strike U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Two suspected drones have struck the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the State Department confirmed, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The State Department said in a cable viewed by the WSJ on Monday that the drones hit the roof and perimeter of the chancery. “Post is sheltering in place and reported no injuries,” the department added.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said the Embassy was struck by two drones, resulting in a limited fire and minor material damage to the building.

Reuters, citing three people familiar with the matter, reported that a loud blast was heard and flames were seen at the Embassy. One of those sources described the fire as minor.

The U.S. Mission to Saudi Arabia has issued a shelter-in-place order in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran, and recommended they take cover immediately. The mission also said it was limiting non-essential travel to military installations in the region.

The attack is the latest in a series of Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia since the start of the conflict. Saudi Arabia confirmed over the weekend that Iranian strikes had hit both Riyadh and the Eastern Province, which is home to major oil infrastructure.

Iran began its retaliation campaign following coordinated U.S. and Israeli attacks that started on Saturday.
