The massive new Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to finally welcome cross-border traffic this year, and while no opening date has been announced as of March 2026, the price motorists will pay to transit this new record-breaking $6.4 billion crossing has finally been revealed.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced toll fees for the new bridge on Wednesday, revealing that it will cost most cross-border travellers a flat rate of $8 to use the new crossing between Ontario and Michigan.
Bridge tolls will be charged based on vehicle type, and travellers will be able to save up to 25 per cent using the bridge’s toll discount program — dubbed ‘Breakaway’ — announced alongside the fees on Wednesday.
Here’s what it will cost you to cross
Small and mid-sized personal vehicles using the bridge will pay flat rates of $8 (plus an additional $8 per trailer), though Breakaway users will have that rate discounted down to $6.
The toll model differs for large commercial and passenger vehicles, which will pay a standard rate of $12 per axle and a Breakway rate of $9.60. Hazardous and oversized vehicles will be charged according to the same fee structure.

News of the bridge toll rates is welcome news for cross-border commuters and the trickle of Canadian tourists still willing to visit an increasingly hostile U.S., but it also opens the door for shipping and logistics ahead of the bridge’s still unannounced opening date.
Stephen Laskowski, President and CEO of the Ontario Trucking Association, says that the association and members “are excited by today’s announcement that businesses can now set up toll accounts – a key milestone in preparation for the highly anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.”
“As the bridge’s official launch quickly approaches, commercial carriers will be ready for smooth, efficient crossings from the outset,” said Laskowski, noting that the bridge serves “Canada’s busiest commercial trade corridor with the U.S.” and will be integral in improving trade efficiency in the months and years to come.
The reveal of toll rates comes just weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to prevent the bridge’s opening, falsely claiming that Canada owes the U.S. money for the megaproject’s construction.
