A United States advisory commission appointed by President Donald Trump has approved a commemorative gold coin bearing his image, a decision that critics say breaks a 250-year tradition of American democracy by placing a sitting leader’s likeness on official coinage in a manner previously associated only with monarchies and authoritarian states.
The coin, approved Thursday March 19, is intended to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. One face shows Trump standing with his fists on a desk, while the reverse features an eagle with wings spread. The coin carries no monetary value and its sale price has not been disclosed, though comparable commemorative coins sold through the US Mint typically cost over US$1,000.
US Treasurer Brandon Beach defended the design in a statement, saying the commission was thrilled to prepare coins representing the enduring spirit of the country and democracy, and that no profile was more emblematic for such coins than that of a serving president.
The approval was not without institutional resistance. A separate advisory body, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, had refused in February to place the coin on its agenda. Committee member Donald Scarinci explained the refusal in terms that drew a sharp historical line. “Since the signature of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, no nation on earth has issued coins with the image of a democratically elected leader during the time of their service,” he said at the time. “Only those nations ruled by kings or dictators display the image of their sitting ruler on the coins of the realm.”
Trump circumvented that resistance by firing all six members of the US Commission of Fine Arts last October and replacing them with hand-picked appointees, a move that cleared the way for the approval announced Thursday.
The coin approval is part of a broader pattern of Trump administration projects tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which also include plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington DC that has drawn objections from preservationists and aviation safety experts. Trump has also renamed the Kennedy Center for the Arts after himself and is constructing a ballroom at the White House as part of a series of renovation projects since returning to office in January.
The commemorative coin design is separate from two other planned Trump-image coins: a one-dollar circulation piece and a one-ounce gold coin, both of which are at different stages of planning.
