The Philadelphia Phillies have relieved Rob Thomson of his duties as manager, replace him with league veteran.
On Tuesday morning, the Philadelphia Phillies announced the firing of their manager, Rob Thomson. The Phillies say that MLB veteran Don Mattingly will take over managerial duties for the relieved Thomson.
This comes after the Phillies began the 2026 campaign with a tumultuous 9-19 start. The Phillies are already 10.5 games out of first place in the division after being labeled a favorite to win it. It’s back to square one for a roster filled with talent that just isn’t getting it done.
Thomson began serving as the manager of the Phillies in 2022, when he took over for Joe Girardi. The Phillies fired Girardi after a disappointing 22-29 start to that campaign. Thomson then came in and led the Phillies to a National League pennant and a World Series appearance. They have not been back to the Fall Classic since.
Rob Thomson hands the reins over to his bench coach, Don Mattingly, who is no stranger to the responsibility. Mattingly has managerial experience reaching over 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins.
In 2025, Mattingly served on the coaching staff for the Toronto Blue Jays, who took the Dodgers to the brink of Game 7 in the World Series. In his almost four decades of MLB contribution, that was Mattingly’s first-ever World Series appearance.

Thomson’s firing comes on the heels of the Boston Red Sox making wholesale changes to their coaching staff. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Phillies and Sox are next joined by the New York Mets, whose manager, Carlos Mendoza, is in the hottest seat in baseball. His Mets have the same record as the Phillies.
