USA swimming star Gretchen Walsh has set a new world record for the women’s 50m freestyle.
Clocking a time of 23.55 seconds in the final of the Sette Colli Meet in Rome, Walsh shaved 0.04s off the nine-day-old previous world record set by compatriot and training partner Kate Douglass.
More widely known as a butterfly specialist, Walsh broke the American record for the 50m butterfly days before, clocking the second-fastest time ever of 24.51 seconds.
The 23-year-old is continuing her impressive form ahead of her home Games at LA28. At Paris 2024, she came away with four medals, including two golds and two silvers.
“I’m here,” Walsh told reporters after her world record-breaking race on Sunday (28 June). “I’m going to try to keep breaking world records in everything.”
