The US violated international law in Venezuela. These are the questions Australia must now ask | Donald Rothwell

No matter how the Trump administration seeks to justify its actions in seizing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in an audacious snatch and grab operation, this has been a gross violation of international law. The United Nations charter makes crystal clear that all UN members are to refrain from the “use of force” against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. The US violation of Venezuelan airspace, ensuing airstrikes in Caracas, the seizure of Maduro and his illegal removal from Venezuela are all egregious violations of this. Any suggestion it was justified as an act of

The U.S. also announced the seizure of another sanctioned tanker, the M/T Sophia, which it said was “conducting illicit activities in the Caribbean Sea.” The Kremlin, a strong supporter of deposed President Nicolás Maduro, accused the U.S. of violating maritime law by seizing the Marinera. SailGP 2026 begins with boat-breaking crash, surprise U.S. success in Perth

Barely a minute into the opening race of the SailGP Championship season in Perth and there was a boat-breaking collision between Switzerland and New Zealand. While it took both teams out of the day’s racing, Sebastien Schneiter’s Swiss crew at least look likely to return to the water for Sunday’s concluding races; whereas the damage to Pete Burling’s Black Foils — the back few feet of one of the hulls knocked clean off — means the Kiwis take no further part in the weekend. The umpires disqualified New Zealand as the boat that had to keep clear, giving them seven

Canada Just Opened The Door To Cheap Chinese EVs

Canada agreed to cut its 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower tariffs on Canadian farm products. The decision was made during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing to improve strained Canada–China relations. The move breaks with the U.S. on anti-China tariffs, and opens the doors to much more affordable EV imports—possibly around $35,000 Canadian, or $25,000 U.S.  The Chinese automotive industry received the green light to make a deeper incursion into North America on Friday as Canada agreed to cut its 100% tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, opening the door to cheap imports and potentially
