Hilary Knight breaks US Olympic women’s hockey record

Hilary Knight has set a new Team USA women’s hockey record.

WASHINGTON — Team USA captain Hilary Knight has made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Knight now stands alone with the most career goals scored in U.S. women’s hockey Olympic history after scoring a goal to tie the gold medal game against Canada in the last two minutes of the third, pushing them into overtime.

The milestone moment came a week after she had tied the record previously held by Natalie Darwitz and Katie King.

But that’s not all the history Knight has been making at the Milan Cortina Games.

Nearly two weeks ago, she tied the U.S. women’s hockey career scoring record at the Olympics. Knight assisted on Caroline Harvey’s opening goal against Canada to give her 32 points at the Olympics. That matches Jenny Potter, who played at four from 1998-2010. The U.S. captain was retroactively given the assist upon video review more than 90 minutes after Harvey scored early in the game.

And in Team USA’s opening game of these Olympics she became the first hockey player to appear in five Winter Olympics. Knight’s fifth Olympic run includes appearances in Vancouver (2010), Sochi (2014), Pyeongchang (2018), Beijing (2022) and now Milan Cortina (2026).

Knight won gold with Team USA in 2018 and earned silver medals in 2010, 2014 and 2022.

The history-making shot was made during the gold medal match against the United States and Canada. The defending champion Canadians have struggled through parts of the tournament. Canada is 5-1, having been defeated 5-0 by the U.S. in the preliminary round — its most lopsided loss and its first time being shut out in Olympic play.

The Americans have outscored their six opponents by a combined 31-1 while not allowing a goal in more than 331 minutes. That streak dates to Barbora Jurickova scoring on a breakaway in the second period of a tournament-opening 5-1 win over Czechia.
