Netflix Loses Queen of the South This Month

There’s not much time left to stream the USA Network series Queen of the South on Netflix. The series is currently available on the streaming platform, fans will have to binge-watch it quickly, as time to watch the show has almost run out.

Queen of the South is set to leave Netflix on Apr. 7, 2026, which just so happens to be the fifth anniversary of when the series premiered its fifth and final season on USA. The series first launched in 2016, going on to have a run of 62 episodes by the time of its conclusion in 2021. During its run on USA, Queen of the South was well received by viewers, ultimately concluding with an audience score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by M. A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller, Queen of the South was based on the original Spanish novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. It starred Alice Braga (I Am Legend) as Teresa Mendoza, a poor Mexican woman who gets rich by building a vast drug empire. The story starts with Teresa falling in love with a cartel drug trafficker and fleeing to the United States after he is murdered. In the new country, she builds up her own cartel, using her wits and resourcefulness to outsmart rival gangs and law enforcement.

The series also starred Peter Gadiot (Once Upon a Time in Wonderland) as James, Camila’s right-hand man; Hemky Madera (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Pote Galvez, one of Teresa’s strongest allies; Molly Burnett (Law & Order: SVU) as Kelly Anne Van Awken, Teresa’s lawyer; Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch) as DEA agent Alonzo Loya; and David Andrews (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) as Cecil Lafayette, a corrupt judge.

The series could be described as a rival to Breaking Bad, which had concluded its own five-season run on AMC in 2013, three years before Queen of the South debuted. Both shows explore the rise of a criminal antihero with a strong focus on moral complexity. Specifically, Teresa Mendoza’s arc mirrors that of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, who transforms from an “ordinary person” to a feared figure in the criminal underworld. Coincidentally, both shows also happen to each span five seasons with 62 overall episodes.

Queen of the South could have wound up going on for longer. By Season 4, however, the ratings were starting to dip. This was also a period when USA Network was shifting away from scripted originals to put more focus onto unscripted content. The pandemic of 2020 further complicated the show’s production, and it was ultimately decided by the network to pull the plug on Queen of the South.

Stream Queen of the South on Netflix before it’s gone after Apr. 6.
