The 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics are in full swing, and it was another busy day in Italy. Here are the top stories we’re watching today:
Mikaela Shiffrin can’t shake her Olympic demons
Mikaela Shiffrin has a case to be the best skier in the history of the world, and it’s a testament to her success that an Olympic career with two gold medals and a silver could be considered a disappointment. But it’s a subject that’s hard to avoid at this point.

After a highly disappointing finish in the women’s team combined earlier this week, Shiffrin finished in 11th place in the giant slalom, where she won gold in 2018 at PyeongChang.
Erin Jackson misses podium in defense of her 500m speedskating title
Erin Jackson’s pursuit of a second consecutive gold medal in the 500-meter speedskate fell short on Sunday. She was no match for the Netherlands’ Femke Kok, who sprinted to an Olympic record time of 36.49 seconds to win gold.

Jackson missed the podium entirely, finishing fifth — albeit five-hundredths of a second away from bronze. (Her time of 37.32 seconds placed eight-tenths of a second off the lead.) Kok was viewed as the favorite coming into Sunday’s race, but Jackson was considered a contender as the reigning gold medalist and two World Cup titles since the 2022 Beijing Games.
Nick Baumgartner, Faye Thelan eliminated in quarterfinals of mixed team snowboard cross
Nick Baumgartner won gold alongside Lindsey Jacobellis in the inaugural mixed team snowboard cross in Beijing. This year, Jacobellis was in the broadcast booth, and the 44-year-old Baumgartner returned alongside partner Faye Thelan.

But a repeat wasn’t in the cards, as the U.S. team DNF-ed its first run and finished fourth in its second, failing to advance to the semifinals.
Team USA faces Germany in men’s hockey (3:10 p.m. ET)
The U.S. is off to a good start in the Olympic men’s hockey tournament, beating Denmark 6-3 and Latvia 5-1. Their final challenge of group play will come against Germany.
While they won both of the previous games by three-plus goals, it also took the Americans a while to get going, so a quick start would be nice as the event heads toward the knockout rounds. Co-gold medal favorite Canada will also be playing earlier Sunday against Switzerland.

Fans wondering if suspensions might result from the fight toward the end of Canada’s ice hockey match with France quickly got an answer. Neither player will be disciplined beyond the 5-minute penalties and ejections they received, reports SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Wilson will be available to play for Canada, which earned a bye into the Olympic tournament’s quarterfinal round. Crinon can play in France’s next game, with its opponent for the qualifying round to be determined.

Canada improved to 3-0 in men’s ice hockey group play, dominating France in a 10-2 victory on Sunday.
Macklin Celebrini tallied two goals, while Tom Wilson, Devon Toews, Mark Stone, Cale Makar, Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Bo Horvat and Brandon Hagel also scored for Canada.

With a goal and assist, Crosby became Canada’s leading scorer among NHL players in the Winter Olympics, overtaking Jarome Iginla. However, McDavid will likely surpass him eventually as he’s tallied nine points during the 2026 Games thus far. He notched a goal and two assists in Sunday’s win.
Despite the blowout margin, the game provided some drama with 6:59 remaining in the third period when Wilson and France’s Pierre Crinon got into a fight in front of the French goal. Both players received five-minute penalties and were ejected from the game.

Canada held a 3-1 lead over France after one period, but blew the game open in a five-minute stretch during the second frame.
Macklin Celebrini scored on a penalty shot following a hooking call that gave Team Canada a 4-1 lead. But just 19 seconds after that, captain Sidney Crosby also got the puck past France’s Julian Junca to put Canada on top, 5-1.
With an assist earlier in the game, Crosby also became Canada’s scoring leader among NHL players appearing in Winter Olympics competition.

Erin Jackson came up empty in her pursuit of a second straight Olympic gold medal in her signature race.
Unable to unleash the same devastating speed and elite cornering technique that she displayed in Beijing four years ago, the American speedskater missed the podium in the women’s 500 on Sunday evening.
Jackson seemed to catch a break by going head-to-head against world-record holder Femke Kok of the Netherlands in the final pairing of the competition. That gave her the chance to pace herself against the pre-race favorite, who is unbeaten in the 500 since February 2024 and has won the past three world championships at this distance.
What happened instead was that Kok turned on the afterburners on the back stretch and left Jackson behind. Kok won gold in an Olympic record 36.49 seconds. Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands took silver in 37.15, a reversal of their one-two finish in the women’s 1,000 when it was Leerdam who edged Kok for gold. Japan’s Miho Takagi took bronze.
Jackson settled for fifth place, more than eight-tenths of a second behind Kok but only five-hundredths of a second shy of bronze. It was a disappointing near miss for a skater who has endured an injury-plagued season yet arrived in Milan ranked No. 3 in the world in speedskating’s shortest, most explosive race.

The U.S. women’s curling team earned its fourth win in round-robin play, outlasting China for a 6-5 win in 10 ends.
Team USA rallied from a 3-1 deficit after the fourth end, beginning with a 2-0 win in the fifth. However, the Americans were down 5-3 heading into the seventh end. That necessitated an impressive comeback in the next three ends, which included the U.S. stealing the point in ends 9 and 10 for the win.
After six sessions in round-robin play, the U.S. is second in the standings at 4-1. Only Sweden is ahead with a 5-0 record and Switzerland is right behind Team USA at 3-1. The Swiss face Great Britain on Monday at 3:05 p.m. ET. The U.S. is also back at it on Monday versus Italy at 1:05 p.m. ET.

The Canadian women’s curling team is involved in controversy regarding double-touching rules after the men’s team faced the same allegations.
The women didn’t use profanity in protest, as the men did, but were nonetheless incredulous at being accused of cheating.
“I don’t understand the call. I’ll never understand it,” said Canada skip Rachel Homan. “We’ve never done that. It has nothing to do with us.”

Mikaela Shiffrin’s difficult 2026 Winter Olympics continued on Sunday with the Alpine skier finishing 11th in the women’s Giant Slalom competition.
She finished seventh in her first run, 1.02 seconds off the pace with her time of 1:04.25. On her second run, she finished 13th with a time of 1:10.17. Altogether, Shiffrin placed ninth with a combined 2:14.42.
Shiffrin’s last chance at a medal in Milan Cortina will be on Wednesday, competing in the slalom, which has been her best event.

Norway cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo set a Winter Olympics record on Sunday by winning his ninth career gold medal.
Klæbo, 29, earned his record as part of the men’s 4 X 7.5 km relay team, which beat out France and home country Italy in the competition. Norway finished with a time of 1:04:24.5, 22 seconds ahead of France (1:04:46.7) and 47.9 seconds better than Italy (1:05:12.4).
The gold was his fourth of the 2026 Winter Olympics, joining his victories in the 10 km freestyle, 20 km skiathlon and the men’s individual sprint.

The U.S. men’s curling team started Day 9 of the Winter Olympics with an 8-5 win over defending gold medalist Sweden in round-robin play.
Sweden took a 2-1 advantage after the first three ends, but Team USA took control of the match with a 3-0 fourth end. Niklas Edin missed the house trying a takeout, which presented an opportunity for Danny Casper to hit a draw to the button for three points.
That gave the U.S. a 4-2 lead from which Sweden couldn’t recover and the Americans essentially put the match away by taking the sixth and seventh ends, each by a 1-0 score.
With the win, the U.S. improves its record to 3-2 in the round-robin session. Sweden drops to a surprising 1-4. Switzerland tops the standings at 4-0. Team USA will face Norway later on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET.

Lindsey Vonn announced via Instagram on Saturday that her latest surgery went well and she plans to return to the U.S.
The 41-year-old American skier fractured her left leg 13 seconds into her downhill race Sunday. Vonn had previously trained on a torn ACL in the same left leg, an injury she suffered just days before the start of the Olympics. She had her fourth surgery on Saturday and could need more procedures done once she returns to the U.S.
Despite how things ended, Vonn wrote that her ACL tear had nothing to do with her crash and that she did not want her fans to feel sad.

Team USA might have it on a formula to get it through the rough stretches of these Olympics: When all else fails, just add Brady.
Brady Tkachuk threw hands late in the first period, then threw an equalizer into the net halfway through the second to rally a frustrated Team USA to a key 6-3 victory over Denmark. Six different Americans scored, a necessary if erratic and late-arriving offensive explosion.
But not all wins are victories. This was a sloppy, subpar effort from a United States team that needs to be playing at a much higher level if it hopes to bring home a gold against Canada. When your All-Star squad is getting pushed around by a team with only five current NHL players and prospects on its roster, there’s work to be done between now and the knockout rounds.

Denmark played the U.S. tough in the first period and closed the margin to one goal at the end of the second.
But Team USA increased its offensive pressure in the Danish zone, resulting in five goals over the final two periods and an eventual 6-3 victory.
Six players scored goals for the U.S.: Matt Boldy, Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, Noah Hanifin, Jake Guentzel and Jack Hughes. Team USA fired 47 shots on net, while Denmark managed 21.
Up next for the U.S. is Germany on Sunday at 3:10 p.m. ET.

Denmark switched goaltenders late in the third period, replacing Mats Sogaard with Frederik Dichow. But Team USA is still scoring goals.
The U.S. increased its lead to 6-3 on a Jack Hughes score. Hughes stole the puck at center ice and attacked the net on a breakaway. He banked the puck in the net off the backside of Dichow.

Team USA has opened its lead back up to two goals on a Jake Guentzel score.
The U,S, kept pressure on in the Denmark zone, moving the puck around and getting shots off from a variety of angles. Auston Matthews finally pounced on a loose puck besides the net and found Guentzel in front of the net for a quick slap shot.
