Team USA Wins Historic 11th Gold Medal at 2026 Olympics, Breaking Winter Games Record for American Athletes

NEED TO KNOW

  • Team USA has 11 gold medals at the Milan Cortina Games, the most ever won by American athletes at a Winter Olympics

  • The Team USA record of 10 was previously set in Salt Lake City in 2002

  • The record was broken by the freeski mixed team aerials athletes on Feb. 21

Gold sure looks good on Team USA.

The United States’ gold medal tally at the 2026 Winter Olympics hit 11 on Saturday, Feb. 21, making history as the most golds ever won by American athletes at a Winter Olympics.

The feat was accomplished with the help of Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran and Chris Lillis, who won the freeski mixed team aerials event on Saturday morning.

The trio beat Switzerland, who came in second, and China, who took home a bronze medal on a snowy morning in Livigno, Italy.

Team USA previously won 10 gold medals at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, and have taken home nine golds in every Winter Olympics since.

So far, this year’s gold medal events and winners for Team USA include women’s downhill and slalom in alpine skiing, women’s monobob, women’s single skating and team event, women’s moguls, men’s freeski halfpipe and mixed team aerials in freestyle skiing, women’s hockey and men’s speedskating 500-meter and 1,000-meter.

The athletes leaving Milan and Cortina with gold medals around their necks include Breezy Johnson, Mikaela Shiffrin, Elana Meyers Taylor, Alysa Liu, Hilary Knight, Elizabeth Lemley, Alex Ferreira, Jordan Stolz and more.

Other history has been made in Milan, too; when the U.S. women’s hockey team beat Canada, breakout star Laila Edwards became the first Black woman to win a gold medal in hockey.

“It means everything. I think representation is so important, and role models are important too. So to be that potential role model for someone, it means the world to me,” Edwards told PEOPLE in January. “It’s one of the biggest things that motivates me.”

Meyers Taylor, 41, also became the oldest American woman to win individual gold when she won the women’s monobob event.

Heading into the penultimate day of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the U.S. also has 12 silver medals and seven bronze, for a second-place total of 30 medals.

Only Norway has more, with a total of 37.

There are still several chances for the U.S. to earn a few more golds, including the men’s hockey gold medal game against Canada on Sunday, Feb. 22 and speedskating mass start in both men’s and women’s, among other events.
