Opening his remarks at Davos, Donald Trump quickly turns to the war in Ukraine.
After claiming he’s ended eight conflicts – something that has been disputed – Trump then says:
“I believe another one’s coming pretty soon. You know, that is the one that I thought was going to be an easy one. It’s turned out to be probably the most difficult. Last month 29,000 people died, mostly soldiers. Ukraine, Russia, think of that, 29,000. [It was] 27,000 in the month before, 26,000 and the month before that. That’s terrible.”
As he speaks, his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner are in the crowd. As a reminder, they’re heading to Moscow later to meet with Putin.
Later in his remarks, Trump describes Ukraine as the “apple of [Putin’s] eye”.
As a reminder: Previously, we’ve heard claims that peace negotiations were reaching a potential final straight, before they fizzled out.
