Some of the biggest cheers was for his son, and the man he displaced.
The Detroit Red Wings honored Patrick Kane on Wednesday, March 4, celebrating after he became the all-time U.S.-born points leader back on Jan. 29 with his 1,375th point.
The Wings only had one home game left before the Olympic break when Kane, 37, passed Modano, so they opted to push the celebration to the first home date out of the break. That also allowed Mike Modano, the Detroit area native who Kane displaced at the top, to attend the event.
Modano drew huge cheers when he joined Kane and his family on the red carpet at Little Caesars Arena in a roughly 10-minute ceremony ahead of the game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Among the gifts Kane received were a pair of custom-embroidered Bauer hockey gloves.
So did his son, Patrick “Trick” Kane, who raised his arms to show off the gift while delighted fans cheered and laughed.
Also in attendance were Kane’s parents, his significant other, Amanda, and Kane’s sisters. Modano made the trip from Minnesota to be a part of the event. Like Kane, Modano spent the latter part of his career playing for the Wings.
A video tribute included a message from former Wings great Chris Chelios, who called Kane, “the best American hockey player ever.”
Wings captain Dylan Larkin and Kane’s longtime friend Alex DeBrincat, a teammate both with the Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, where Kane spent 15 seasons and won three Stanley Cups, delivered flowers to Kane’s mother, significant other and sisters. Kane also received a plaque from Assistant Executive Director of Hockey Operations for USA Hockey John Vanbiesbrouck on behalf of USA Hockey.
