The recipient of the richest contract in NFL history can afford a lot of things. As Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid put it, maybe even a celebratory meal for media members.
On June 10, the Chiefs added two years to Mahomes existing contract that ties the quarterback in Kansas City through 2033. The total value of Mahomes’ deal is worth $504.75 million, a person close to the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to discuss the specifics of the deal.
His head coach is all for the deal for what his star quarterback offers on and off the field.
“I think it’s great. He (Mahomes) said he was going to take all you (the media) to dinner. I’m not sure when that’s taking place,” Reid, said jokingly to the media on Thursday, June 11. “Listen, he’s done a great job as a professional and then off the field as a father and husband and so you got the whole package there. You guys have had a chance to watch him grow over the years in both those areas and so he’s a great representative of the organization and a heck of a football player.”
Mahomes’ contract makes him the first player in NFL history to have a contract valued over half a billion dollars.
Mahomes’ production certainly justifies his enormous contract. The three-time Super Bowl champion is widely regarded as the best quarterback in the NFL and has rewritten record books: he’s the Chiefs’ all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns, and holds NFL record for most combined yards (passing and rushing) in a season with 5,614, set in 2022.
That said, two-time NFL MVP is facing some adversity as he enters his 10th season.
Mahomes sustained a season-ending torn ACL and LCL on Dec. 14, 2025. The 30-year-old QB is currently rehabilitating his injured left knee.
Patrick Mahomes injury update
Mahomes’ indicated this offseason that he’s eyeing a Week 1 return. The Chiefs and Mahomes are both optimistic that he’ll be available when the team hosts the Denver Broncos Week 1 on Monday, Sept. 14.
Mahomes did some work during Kansas City’s offseason program. Reid told reporters Mahomes will continue to rehab as the quarterback ramps up for next month’s training camp.
“It looks like he’s going to be able to do some things during camp. He did it out here so I would presume in 40 days he’ll be even better than that,” Reid said to reporters. “We’ll just see where it goes and you go through peaks and valleys in this thing – in rehabs – where you might plateau for a little bit and you don’t ever know when those are going to take place. But so far, it’s been a pretty steady climb up the hill there.”
