After 80-year bond, Germans find breaking up with U.S. is hard to do

BERLIN — Having grown up in West Berlin after World War II, Eike Schur’s fondest childhood memories are largely about America. The American GIs who occupied his Kreuzberg neighborhood tossed him packs of Wrigley’s chewing gum and when he got older, he washed their cars and babysat their kids. He listened exclusively to the Armed Forces Network, the U.S. military radio station, fawning over Hank Williams and later Elvis Presley. He remembers trying on his first jeans and vividly recalls when an American major invited his family to the officers’ mess, where he ate strawberries with whipped cream for the

Trump revives family separations amid drive to deport millions: ‘A tactic to punish’ | US immigration

The Trump administration has revived the practice of separating families in order to coerce immigrants and asylum seekers to leave the US, attorneys and former immigration officials allege. In several cases, officials have retaliated against immigrants who challenged deportation orders by forcibly separating them from their children, a Guardian investigation found. The officials misclassified the children as “unaccompanied minors” before placing them in government-run shelters or foster care. The new practice has taken effect as the administration has also issued stringent new limits on who can take custody of unaccompanied minors – which advocates say keep thousands of children away

As US and Israeli jets descended to deliver the opening salvos of the war in Iran, Donald Trump’s back-of-the-envelope plan for regime change in Tehran was about to run into the reality of the largest US intervention in the Middle East since the start of the Iraq war in 2003. That reality came quickly. One hundred and seventy-five people were killed when a US Tomahawk missile slammed into a girls’ school, apparently because the Pentagon used outdated targeting data for the strike. Hundreds of air-defence missiles were expended as Iran’s initial missile counterattack was mostly parried – but one drone

Expect Trump to make Iran rebuild itself when the bombs stop

March 8, 2026, 6:03 a.m. ET The long-term outcomes of the latest U.S and Israeli air war against Iran remain very much uncertain. But we do know this: President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are determined like never before to shatter the Iranian regime. And they have the firepower to do it.
