The U.S. military said on the 12th that it launched additional airstrikes on Iran at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the 12th (6 a.m. Korea time on the 13th).

U.S. Central Command wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that it had “begun additional strikes to degrade Iran’s ability to attack merchant vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that “the commander-in-chief ordered the strikes to hold the Iranian military accountable.” This indicates that U.S. President Donald Trump initiated the strikes by order.

The United States and Iran have been exchanging attacks day after day recently. Earlier, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, citing an Iranian official, reported that 10 to 11 U.S. shells had fallen on Qeshm Island, a strategic point in the Strait of Hormuz. The official said the targets were military facilities and that there were no casualties.

Barak Ravid, a reporter for the U.S. online outlet Axios, also wrote on X that “a U.S. official said the U.S. military carried out several strikes on Iranian missile and air defense systems an hour ago.” He added that the U.S. military also attacked small vessels of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in several areas around the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the fourth time the United States has struck Iranian military targets in response since Iran resumed attacks on civilian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz on the 7th.

Iran retaliated as well. According to the state-run Fars news agency, the IRGC attacked a U.S. surface-to-surface missile launcher, the “HIMARS,” deployed in Kuwait through a precision drone operation. HIMARS is a high-mobility rocket and missile launch system mounted on trucks. U.S. Central Command stressed on X that “Iranian propaganda organs claimed that three U.S. troops were killed in Kuwait by Iran’s attack, but this is not true,” adding that “there have been no reports whatsoever of any deaths or injuries of U.S. troops in the area.”
