In an unexpected roster move on Friday morning, the Chicago Cubs have called up infielder Pedro Ramirez. Ramirez is taking Matt Shaw’s place on the roster, who heads to the injured list with mid-back tightness. Ramirez is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s game.
This year with Triple-A Iowa, Ramirez is batting .312 with nine home runs and 40 runs batted in. Ramirez is a player who received a lot of praise from his fellow teammates. He is also a player that manager Craig Counsell raved about during spring training, mentioning he could have a key role on the 2026 roster if opportunities arose. Well, here he is.
Meanwhile, Shaw heads to the injured list, retroactive to May 20th. Shaw has no hits in his last 16 plate appearances. He is one of many Cubs who might benefit from some sort of reset like this.
The Chicago Cubs are in their worst stretch of baseball this season, dropping four straight series. Earlier this week, they were swept at home at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are now in second place in the division, 1.5 games behind the Brewers.
The Cubs will be at Wrigley Field all weekend, taking on the Astros. After that, the Cubs will be on the road for the week to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals. They’ll then return home to begin their June against the Athletics and San Francisco Giants.
