Team USA names new Ryder Cup captain after Tiger Woods rejection

The PGA of America has finally named its captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, moving on after Tiger Woods dithered before eventually declining the offer following his car crash

Jim Furyk has been selected as Team USA’s captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.

Furyk appeared in nine Ryder Cups as a player, winning twice. He captained the defeat to Thomas Bjorn’s Europeans in Paris in 2018, but Tiger Woods’ personal life drama has led to Furyk getting a second crack at the job.

Woods was lined up for the assignment in the Republic of Ireland, but he declined the role after his rollover car crash last month. The 15-time major champion faces charges of driving under the influence and refusing to take a chemical or physical test of his breath or urine.

News of Furyk’s appointment was first reported by the Associated Press, and the decision is sure to draw a mixed reaction from fans.

Although he led Team USA to a dominant Presidents Cup victory in 2024, his team performed meekly at Le Golf National eight years ago.

Europe romped to a 17.5-10.5 victory in France, and Furyk’s four captain’s picks won just two of their 12 matches over the three days.

Furyk succeeds Keegan Bradley as captain after the defeat to Luke Donald’s Europe at Bethpage Black in September. Donald, who masterminded back-to-back wins in Rome and New York, is chasing a three-peat next year.

Furyk believes he is better qualified for the role of captaincy after his chastening experience in Paris. He said after the 2024 Presidents Cup win: “I think I was a lot more prepared this year than I was in ’18.

“I think the experience in ’18 and knowing that I could have done a few things better, I think, really helped.”

Furyk will be Team USA’s first second-time captain since Davis Love III, who was given another shot after the stunning defeat at Medinah in 2012. He atoned four years later, steering his team to a dominant win at Hazeltine.

Donald was named Europe’s captain for Adare Manor seven weeks ago, but the PGA of America, which oversees Team USA, was forced to delay its decision as Woods dithered over the offer.

Prior to his crash, the 50-year-old had expressed doubts over his ability to do the role justice due to other responsibilities, specifically his boardroom duties with the PGA Tour.
